Abstract

Medical residency is a crucial and transcendental stage for any physician pursuing a specialty; therefore, having a capable and upright mentor is crucial to achieving the desired goal. Dr. Juan Leiva Goicochea is a Peruvian rheumatologist born in Trujillo. He trained residents in this specialty for a period of 10 years (2013-2022). He practiced his specialty alongside his academic work. He was upright in his profession and teaching. He instilled in his residents a critical and unorthodox attitude toward current knowledge. He is considered one of the best rheumatologists in northern Peru. This document emphasizes the importance of having a dedicated resident mentor for the successful future performance of the specialist and some experiences from his residency with Dr. Leiva.
