Abstract

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died in Vienna on December 5, 1791, two months before his 36th birthday. His remains were buried with other bodies. The death certificate stated as a cause of death “Miliary fever,” without further clarification. Poisoning has been postulated as a cause of death, but there is no evidence to specify the nature of his illness, which has given rise to various diagnostic hypoth- eses. From the available testimonies, it is reasonable to postulate acute rheumat- ic fever carditis as a cause of death.
